STORY / CONTEXT

Today we travel back to Joshua 2, where Israel is preparing to enter the Promised Land for the very first time.
Joshua sends two spies into Jericho, the first city standing between God’s people and His promises.
There they encounter an unlikely woman named Rahab—a prostitute living behind enemy lines whose story becomes one of the greatest pictures of God’s redeeming grace in all of Scripture.

SCRIPTURE READING — Joshua 2:1–7

Joshua secretly sends two spies into Jericho.
Rahab hides them from the king’s soldiers.
She risks everything to protect God’s people.
The spies escape safely because of her courage.

Key Insight

The spies are operating behind enemy lines.

Following God has always required courage.
There will be seasons when faithful obedience places believers in environments where God’s values collide with the world’s values.
The battle has always been spiritual before it is cultural.

SCRIPTURE READING — Joshua 2:8–14

Rahab confesses that she has heard about the Lord.
She believes Israel’s God is the one true God.
She asks the spies to spare her family.
The spies promise to rescue her because of her faith.

GOD’S GRACE… (PART 1)

Rescues us out of personal sinfulness

Rahab is consistently identified in Scripture by her sinful past.
Her failures were public, her shame was real, and yet God’s grace moved toward her first.
Grace reaches people before they ever deserve it.

No one is beyond God’s redeeming power.
Our identity is not determined by our worst sin but by God’s saving grace.

Rescues us out of situational hopelessness

Rahab lived in a city already marked for judgment.
From every human perspective, her future appeared hopeless.

Yet God made a way where none seemed possible.

Whether the struggle is financial, relational, physical, or emotional, God’s grace specializes in rescuing people from circumstances they cannot overcome themselves.

Rahab lowers the spies through her window.
They instruct her to hang a scarlet cord from that same window.
Everyone inside her house will be spared when judgment comes.
Rahab believes God’s promise and obeys.

GOD’S GRACE… (PART 2)

Rescues us out of eternal lostness

The scarlet cord points beyond Jericho to the greater rescue God would provide through Jesus Christ.

Throughout Scripture, the scarlet thread reminds us that salvation comes through the shedding of blood.

Rahab’s temporary rescue foreshadows our eternal rescue through Christ.

Paul reminds us that “in Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses.”
John reminds us that believers overcome “by the blood of the Lamb.”

Jesus is the fulfillment of every rescue story in the Bible.

SUMMARY / APPLICATION

Rahab’s story is ultimately not about an unlikely heroine—it is about an extraordinary Savior.

God’s grace still rescues today:

• It rescues us from personal sinfulness.
• It rescues us from situational hopelessness.
• It rescues us from eternal lostness.

The scarlet cord hanging from Rahab’s window pointed forward to another scarlet thread God would lower from heaven—the blood of Jesus Christ. Through His death and resurrection, God has provided the only rescue that lasts forever. Will you trust in His grace today?
