3 “I Am” Statements That Gave Paul His Passion ( You Need These Too)

STORY / CONTEXT

We continue our Personal Faves series with one of the Apostle Paul’s most passionate introductions in all of Scripture. Before Paul ever arrives in Rome, he already loves these believers, prays for them continually, and longs to strengthen them.

Although Paul has never met the Roman church, their faith has become known throughout the world. Their reputation isn’t built on their influence, wealth, or accomplishments—but on their faithfulness to Christ.

Paul also reveals that, despite his desire to visit Rome, he has repeatedly been prevented from going. Sometimes God delays our plans because He is still accomplishing His purposes elsewhere.

Leadership Lesson

Sometimes ministry is delayed because of:

  • An unfinished obligation
  • An unusual opposition
  • An unexpected opportunity

God’s delays are never God’s absence.

SCRIPTURE READING

Romans 1:14–17

Paul concludes this opening section with three powerful personal declarations.

These aren’t merely statements about Paul.

They reveal the heartbeat of every devoted follower of Jesus.

1. I AM UNDER OBLIGATION

Romans 1:14

Paul describes himself as a debtor—not because people have done something for him, but because God has entrusted him with the gospel.

The Gospel is meant to be shared

As quoting Ray Pritchard explains, Paul’s debt was ultimately to God. Since he could never repay God directly, he “paid it forward” by sharing the gospel with others.

The grace we’ve received creates an obligation to those who have not yet heard.

Key Truth

Christians are not indebted because the world owes us something.

We are indebted because God has given us something worth sharing.

2. I AM EAGER TO PREACH THE GOSPEL

Romans 1:15

Paul isn’t reluctant.

He isn’t hesitant.

He is eager.

Despite persecution, rejection, and hardship, Paul remains ready to proclaim Christ wherever God opens a door.

Gospel eagerness

The gospel was never meant to be hidden or hoarded.

It was meant to be heralded.

Paul’s excitement wasn’t built around comfort or opportunity—it was built around Christ.

Key Truth

The more we treasure the gospel, the more eager we’ll become to share it.

3. I AM NOT ASHAMED OF THE GOSPEL

Romans 1:16–17

This is one of the defining statements of Paul’s ministry.

He is unashamed because the gospel possesses God’s power to save and reveals God’s righteousness through faith.

Why some are tempted toward shame

Paul writes to believers living in Rome—a culture that often mocked Christianity.

Christians could have been ashamed:

  • Intellectually — viewed as foolish by the educated elite.
  • Socially — the gospel challenged cultural values.
  • Morally — following Jesus demanded repentance and transformation.

Yet Paul refused to be embarrassed by the only message that saves.

The ancient critic Celsus mocked Christianity as a religion for the weak and uneducated, but Paul understood that God’s power is not measured by human opinion.

Two reasons Paul is unashamed

  • The gospel is the power of God for salvation.
  • The gospel reveals the righteousness of God from faith for faith.

Key Truth

If the gospel has the power to save us, it is always worth proclaiming.

SUMMARY / APPLICATION

Paul’s passion for Christ shaped everything about his life.

His three “I AM” statements challenge every believer today.

Reflection Questions

  • Do I feel under obligation to share the gospel God has entrusted to me?
  • Am I eager to speak about Jesus when God opens the door?
  • Am I unashamed of the gospel, even when culture pushes back?

Paul’s identity wasn’t rooted in his reputation, comfort, or success.

It was rooted in Christ.

May we become people who are under obligation, eager to proclaim, and never ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
