Don’t Put God in a Box
1. Limiting God Leads Us to Use Him
“Let us bring the ark… then it will go with us and save us…”
(1 Samuel 4:3)
The Israelites treated the ark like a good luck charm, using God for their plans rather than following Him. We do the same when we only pray in crisis, serve for recognition, or expect immediate rewards from God.
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven…”
(Matthew 7:21–23)
Application: Instead of using God, ask daily: “God, how do You want to use me today?”
2. Limiting God Leads Us to Place Our Desires Above Him
“There was Dagon, fallen with his face to the ground before the ark…”
(1 Samuel 5:1–5)
God is greater than every idol and desire we hold. An idol is anything that gets more of your attention and affection than Jesus.
“They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worshiped and served what has been created instead of the Creator…”
(Romans 1:25)
Application: Surrender your desires and idols, allowing God to set your priorities.
3. Limiting God Leads Us to Spiritual Blindness
“Prepare a new cart and two milk cows…”
(1 Samuel 6:7–9)
The Philistines ignored God’s clear power, calling His judgment “coincidence.” Denying God’s greatness blinds us to His work in our lives.
“The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers…”
(2 Corinthians 4:4)
Application: Don’t let sin harden your heart toward God; today is the day to respond.
4. Limiting God Leads Us to Approach Him on Our Terms
“God struck down the men… because they looked inside the ark…”
(1 Samuel 6:19)
God is holy, and we don’t get to approach Him casually or on our terms. We should not impose our preferences on God but submit to His Word.
“Let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe…”
(Hebrews 12:28–29)
Application: Prepare your heart before worship, honor God in prayer, and remember Jesus is the only way to a right relationship with God.
5. Stop Limiting God and Let Him Be Lord
“If you are returning to the LORD with all your heart, remove the foreign gods…”
(1 Samuel 7:2–4)
Samuel called Israel to repentance, confession, and sacrifice—pointing us to Jesus, the perfect sacrifice, who gives victory over sin and death.
Key Point: Stop limiting God. Let Him be Lord over every area of your life and walk in the victory Jesus has secured for you.
