Following Jesus at His Word
STORY / CONTEXT
Jesus’ public ministry is gaining momentum. Crowds are gathering to hear Him teach, witness His miracles, and experience His authority. Along the shores of the Sea of Galilee, Jesus encounters a fisherman named Simon Peter. What begins as an ordinary workday becomes a life-changing invitation to follow Christ.

Jesus qualifies and commissions every believer.
SCRIPTURE READING – Luke 5:1–11
- Crowds press in to hear the Word of God
- Jesus teaches from Simon’s boat
- Simon obeys Jesus’ instruction to let down the nets
- A miraculous catch of fish overwhelms the fishermen
- Peter recognizes his sinfulness before Jesus

JESUS CAPTIVATES YOUR ATTENTION
Luke 5:1
The crowd was pressing in to hear the Word of God.
Before Jesus changes a life, He captures a heart.
Following Christ begins when He becomes more compelling than everything else competing for our attention.
Questions:
- Does Jesus truly have my attention?
- Am I captivated by His Word?
JESUS LEVERAGES YOUR LIFE
Luke 5:2–3
Jesus steps into Simon’s boat and uses it as a platform for ministry.
An ordinary fishing boat becomes a pulpit.
A DISCIPLE OF JESUS…
Recognizes every part of life as an opportunity for Kingdom impact.
- Work becomes ministry
- Resources become tools
- Relationships become opportunities
Jesus uses what we already have for His purposes.
JESUS COMPELS YOUR TRUST
Luke 5:4–6
Jesus instructs Simon to fish in a way that seems unreasonable.
Simon responds:
“But at your word, I will let down the nets.”
A DISCIPLE OF JESUS…
Trusts Christ above personal understanding.
The Christian life is not built on:
- “I feel like…”
The Christian life is built on:
- “At Your word…”
When we obey Christ, we discover His faithfulness.
JESUS CONNECTS YOU TO OTHERS
Luke 5:7
The catch is so large that Simon must call for help.
A DISCIPLE OF JESUS…
Links arms with others for the mission of God.
The Christian life is not a solo endeavor.
God’s people are called to:
- Encourage one another
- Serve alongside one another
- Reach others together
Kingdom work is a team effort.
JESUS EXPOSES YOUR NEED
Luke 5:8
Peter falls before Jesus and says:
“Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”
A DISCIPLE OF JESUS…
Recognizes personal need before a holy Savior.
The closer we get to Jesus, the more clearly we see ourselves.
Peter’s response is not pride but humility.
God specializes in using imperfect people who understand their need for Him.
JESUS COMMISSIONS YOU
Luke 5:9–11
Jesus tells Peter:
“Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”
Peter and the others leave everything and follow Him.
A DISCIPLE OF JESUS…
Lives on mission with Christ.
Jesus does not simply save us from something.
He saves us for something.
- He calls us to follow
- He calls us to serve
- He calls us to make disciples
The same Jesus who called Peter still calls believers today.

Jesus qualifies and commissions every believer.
He:
- Captivates your attention
- Leverages your life
- Compels your trust
- Connects you to others
- Exposes your need
- Commissions you for His mission

- Has Jesus captured my attention?
- Am I living with an “At Your word” mentality?
- What area of my life am I withholding from His mission?
- What might Jesus be calling me to leave behind so I can follow Him more fully?
The call of a lifetime is not simply believing in Jesus—it is following Him wherever He leads.
