When Heaven Meets Earth
1. The Church was born by a MIRACLE of God (Acts 2:1–13)
-
On Pentecost, the Spirit comes like a mighty rushing wind and tongues of fire rest on each disciple. They begin speaking in languages they had never learned—clear, understandable, miraculous speech.
-
Jews from every nation heard the Gospel in their own tongue (dialektos). God intentionally reversed the confusion of Babel by uniting His people through His Spirit.
Key Truth: The Church is not man’s invention—it was born by a supernatural act of God.
Application: While this particular miracle (Pentecost tongues) was unique to the Church’s birth, we should still expect God to work miraculously among His people today—through transformed lives, answered prayer, and the spread of the Gospel.
2. The Church was born with the MESSAGE of God (Acts 2:14–36)
-
Peter stands to explain what just happened—not drunken chaos, but the fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy: “I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh” (v. 17).
-
The center of Peter’s sermon is Jesus: His life (v. 22), His death (v. 23), His resurrection (v. 24, 31–32), and His exaltation (v. 33–36).
-
Peter’s summary: “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (v. 21).
Key Truth: The Spirit came to empower the Church to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus. The miracle drew the crowd; the message of Jesus transformed them.
Application: Our message has not changed in 2,000 years. We don’t preach ourselves, politics, or self-help—we preach Jesus as Lord and Christ.
3. The Church was born from MAN’S RESPONSE to God (Acts 2:37–41)
-
After Peter’s sermon, the people are “cut to the heart” and cry out: “What shall we do?” (v. 37). That is the right question—conviction must lead to response.
-
Peter’s answer: “Repent and be baptized… for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (v. 38).
-
That day, 3,000 people believed, were baptized, and added to the Church.
Key Truth: The Church is built on the miracle of God, with the message of God, but it grows as people respond to God with repentance and faith.
Application: Every Gospel sermon should expect a response. Conviction leads to the question: What should I do? The answer is still the same—Repent. Believe. Be baptized. Follow Christ.
Conclusion
So, what does Acts 2 teach us about the Church’s birth?
-
It was born by a miracle of God—the Spirit came in power.
-
It was born with the message of God—Jesus as Lord and Christ.
-
It was born from man’s response to God—repentance, faith, and baptism.
If you’ve been cut to the heart today and you’re wondering, “What should I do?”—the invitation is the same as Peter’s: Repent, trust Christ, and follow Him.
