If Jesus is Alive, He Changes Everything
The Resurrection That Leads to Life
John 20:1–18 (ESV)
Big Idea:
The empty tomb declares that Jesus is greater—and that truth changes everything.
Introduction: The Empty Tomb Changes Everything
- Jesus lived, died, and rose again—defeating sin, death, and hell.
- If Jesus is still dead, this gathering is meaningless.
- But if He is alive, then He is King—and He is greater than anything we face.
1. Jesus Is Greater Than Our Past
John 20:1
- Mary Magdalene—once bound, broken, and unlikely—becomes the first witness.
- The resurrection meets us in the reality of our story, not after we clean it up.
Truth: No past is beyond the reach of a risen Savior.
Application (roll out):
- If your past is defined by addiction… Jesus is greater
- If your past is defined by immorality… Jesus is greater
- If your past is defined by failure… Jesus is greater
- If your past is defined by religion… Jesus is greater
2. Jesus Is Greater Than Our Doubt
John 20:11–14
- Mary stands at the empty tomb… confused, grieving, and doubting.
- Even with evidence in front of her, she struggles to believe.
Truth: Jesus does not wait for perfect faith—He meets us in our doubt.
Application:
- You don’t need every question answered to trust Him
- Faith is not the absence of doubt—it’s encountering the risen Christ
3. Jesus Is Greater Than Our Despair
John 20:11, 14–16
- Mary is overwhelmed with grief—her hope feels gone.
- Then everything changes with one moment…
“Mary.”
Truth: The resurrected Jesus calls us personally.
The Turning Point: Jesus Calls Her by Name
John 20:14–16 | John 10:3–4
- Recognition comes not through explanation—but through relationship
- The Shepherd calls His sheep—and they know His voice
When Jesus calls your name:
- He meets you personally
- He awakens faith
- He restores hope
Result of the Resurrection in Our Lives
1. Jesus Turns Our Shame into a Story
- Mary’s past becomes a testimony of redemption
- What once defined you no longer has the final word
2. Jesus Turns Our Aimlessness into a Purpose
John 20:17–18
- Mary goes from weeping at a tomb to declaring, “I have seen the Lord!”
- Encounter leads to mission
Conclusion: The Question of Easter
- Is Jesus greater for you?
- Greater than your past?
- Greater than your doubt?
- Greater than your despair?
The empty tomb isn’t just something to believe in—
it’s something to build your life on.
