What Happens When Jesus Fills the City?
INTRODUCTION
Acts 5:28
In his very first sermon at Quail Springs, Pastor Connor issued a challenge:
“Church, what better thing could we, at Quail Springs, be known for than we are filling our city with Jesus? That’s what I believe God is calling us to do.”
What would it look like if Jesus truly filled a city?
Acts 19 gives us a glimpse.
Paul enters Ephesus, one of the most powerful and influential cities in the ancient world—known for commerce, culture, and the temple of Artemis.
But when the gospel spreads in Ephesus, something remarkable happens.
Acts 19:17
The name of the Lord Jesus was held in high esteem—
literally, His name was magnified.
When Jesus fills a city, His name is lifted high and lives begin to change.
Acts 19 shows us five things that happen when Jesus fills a city.
1. When Jesus Fills the City
Jesus Is Magnified Over Religion
(Acts 19:1–7)
Paul encounters disciples who had experienced religion but not transformation.
They knew about John’s baptism but knew nothing about the Holy Spirit.
They were sincere.
They were religious.
But they did not yet know Jesus.
Religion can produce rituals,
but only Jesus produces new life.
When they hear the full gospel, they respond in faith and receive the Spirit.
Key truth:
Religion cannot transform a heart—
only a relationship with Jesus can.
When Jesus fills a city, empty religion fades and real faith rises.
2. When Jesus Fills the City
Jesus Is Magnified Through the Word of God
(Acts 19:8–10)
Paul begins teaching in the synagogue.
For months he reasons, persuades, and dialogues with people from the Scriptures.
Eventually he continues teaching daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.
Luke records something extraordinary:
All the residents of Asia heard the word of the Lord.
The gospel spread because the Word of God was proclaimed.
When Jesus fills a city:
-
The Scriptures are opened
-
Conversations about Christ multiply
-
Believers speak about Jesus everywhere they go
The spread of the gospel does not rely only on sermons.
It spreads through everyday conversations about Jesus.
3. When Jesus Fills the City
Jesus Is Magnified Through Miracles
(Acts 19:11–17)
God begins performing extraordinary miracles through Paul.
Lives are changed.
People are healed.
Demons are cast out.
God’s power becomes undeniable.
But whenever God moves, Satan attempts to counterfeit.
The seven sons of Sceva try to use the name of Jesus without knowing Him.
The demon responds:
“Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize—but who are you?”
They discover that God’s power cannot be borrowed or manipulated.
The name of Jesus is not magic.
It belongs to those who truly know Him.
And when this event spreads through the city:
Fear falls on everyone and the name of Jesus is magnified.
4. When Jesus Fills the City
Jesus Is Magnified in a Purified Church
(Acts 19:18–20)
As people come to Christ, repentance follows.
Believers begin confessing their sins publicly.
Those who practiced magic gather their books and burn them.
The value of the books equals 50,000 pieces of silver—a massive sacrifice.
Why?
Because when Jesus fills hearts, sin loses its grip.
The gospel does not simply forgive sin.
It transforms how we live.
If we want Jesus to fill our city, He must first fill His church.
Revival always begins with repentance among God’s people.
5. When Jesus Fills the City
Jesus Is Magnified Throughout the Life of the City
(Acts 19:23–27)
Eventually the gospel begins to affect every aspect of city life.
The idol-making industry begins to collapse.
Why?
Because people are turning from idols to Christ.
The power of the gospel begins to disrupt:
-
Commerce
-
Culture
-
False religion
-
Economic systems built on idolatry
When Jesus fills a city, the impact reaches far beyond the church walls.
The entire culture begins to feel the influence of Christ.

Through the power of God

And the same question remains for us today:
What would it look like if Jesus filled Oklahoma City?
It begins with people who are willing to magnify the name of Jesus with their lives.
