Serving & Suffering

From Serving to Suffering

Acts 6:1–7:60 ESV

Big Idea:
“From serving to suffering, Stephen shows us that a life surrendered to Christ has the Holy Spirit for it all.”

1. The Holy Spirit Empowered Stephen the SERVANT (Acts 6:1–7)

“Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit…”

When a dispute arose in the early church, the apostles appointed seven Spirit-filled men to care for the widows. Stephen’s reputation was marked not by personality or power, but by being full of the Holy Spirit.

Practical takeaways:

  • God’s greatest servants are Spirit-filled, not self-filled.
  • The Holy Spirit enables humble service and protects unity in the church.
  • When God’s Word and God’s work stay in balance, the Gospel advances.

2. The Holy Spirit Empowered Stephen the EVANGELIST (Acts 6:8–15; Acts 6:10)

“But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking.”

Stephen didn’t stay in the background. The same Spirit who empowered him to serve gave him boldness to speak. When opposition arose, God’s truth could be ignored—but His wisdom and power could not be denied.

Practical takeaways:

  • The Holy Spirit turns faithful servants into fearless witnesses.
  • Spiritual attacks often come right after spiritual advancement—stay alert.
  • Our strength in defending truth comes not from clever arguments but from the Spirit’s wisdom.

3. The Holy Spirit Empowered Stephen the MARTYR (Acts 7:54–60)

“But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.”

As Stephen was being stoned, his final words echoed those of Jesus: “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit… Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” Even in death, his life radiated grace and forgiveness.

Practical takeaways:

  • The Spirit gives courage to face suffering with peace.
  • True Christlikeness is revealed not just in how we live—but in how we respond when we suffer.
  • A surrendered life can trust the Spirit to give strength for every season—serving, speaking, and even suffering.

Closing Challenge

  • What are you filled with—self, fear, or the Holy Spirit?
  • Are you serving where God has placed you?
  • Are you speaking truth with courage?
  • Are you ready to stand firm in suffering?

Stephen’s story reminds us: the Holy Spirit doesn’t just empower us for what’s easy—He sustains us for what’s eternal.
