Is the Design for Marriage Broken?

STORY / CONTEXT

We all know marriage is struggling—personally, culturally, statistically.

But the real question is this:
Does the problem exist with the design… or with the users of the design?

To answer that, we have to go back to the beginning.

SCRIPTURE FOUNDATION

Genesis 2:18–23

God creates woman for man—intentionally, relationally, perfectly.

This is not accidental.
This is designed.

1. God is the DESIGNER of marriage and family

Genesis 2:18

“It is not good that man should be alone…”

Marriage begins with God—not culture, not preference, not evolution.

  • God created relationship
  • God created complementarity
  • God created marriage on purpose

Truth:
Marriage is not a human idea—it is a divine design.

2. God is the DEFINER of marriage and family

Genesis 2:24–25

“A man shall leave… hold fast… become one flesh.”

Definition:
Marriage is one man and one woman in a lifelong covenant relationship, living in fellowship, stewarding creation, and enjoying the Creator.

  • It is covenant, not convenience
  • It is unity, not individuality
  • It is designed to be whole, without shame

Key Line:
Marriage is not broken—people are.

The design is perfect.
Sin is the problem.

TRANSITION: What changed?

Sin entered the story.

  • Shame replaced innocence
  • Conflict replaced unity
  • Distance replaced intimacy

Genesis 3

The issue is not the design—
it’s the corruption of the design.

3. God is the RESCUER of marriage and family

Genesis 3:16–24

Even in judgment, God provides grace.

  • He covers their shame
  • He pursues them in their failure
  • He sets the stage for redemption

Truth:
The greatest consequence wasn’t pain—it was separation from God.

And the greatest hope is the Gospel.

GOSPEL CONNECTION

Marriage is not just a relationship—it’s a reflection.

The path to a meaningful marriage illustrates the Gospel and imitates God’s love.

1 John 4:7–11

  • God loved us first
  • God loved us sacrificially
  • God loved us unconditionally

Covenant Love:

  • Sacrificial in nature
  • Unconditional in application

APPLICATION

If God designed it…
If God defined it…
If God redeems it…

Then our role is to:

  • Receive His grace
  • Extend His grace
  • Reflect His love

SUMMARY

The problem is not the design.
The problem is sin.

And the solution is not redefining marriage—
it’s redeeming people through Jesus.

FINAL REFLECTION

Are you trying to fix your marriage…
or are you letting God transform your heart?

Breathe in God’s grace.
Breathe out God’s grace.
