The Miracle of the Manger

Introduction

As we continue our Advent series, The Miracles of Christmas, we turn our attention to the miracle of the manger. The King of Kings did not arrive with earthly power or royal ceremony—but through humility, obedience, and divine intervention. What appears ordinary on the surface is nothing less than the supernatural work of God.

1. The miracle in the manger is SUPERNATURAL

(Matthew 1:18–20; Luke 1:26–35)

Jesus’ birth was not the result of human effort but divine action. Twice, Matthew makes it clear that this child was conceived from the Holy Spirit—confirming Jesus’ full deity.

  • The virgin birth reveals Jesus as fully God and fully man

  • The Holy Spirit is the source of this miracle

  • Salvation requires a divine solution, not human effort

“Of all things that Christianity proclaims, this is the most staggering…” — Tim Keller

Key truth: The miracle of Christmas begins with God doing what only God can do.

2. The miracle in the manger overcomes our SCANDAL, defeats our SHAME, and meets us in our SUFFERING

(Matthew 1:19–20; Luke 2:6–7)

The circumstances surrounding Jesus’ birth were anything but comfortable or respectable by human standards.

• Overcomes our Scandal

Mary’s pregnancy was culturally scandalous—yet God worked through it to bring redemption.

• Defeats our Shame

Joseph and Mary faced misunderstanding, whispers, and fear—but God replaced disgrace with obedience and faith.

• Meets us in our Suffering

Jesus was born far from home, in poverty, and placed in a manger—showing us that God enters our pain rather than avoiding it.

Key truth: God is not distant from brokenness—He enters it.

3. The miracle in the manger is that Jesus SAVES His people from their sins

(Matthew 1:21)

The angel did not leave Joseph guessing about the child’s purpose.

“You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

  • Jesus (Yeshua) means “The Lord saves”

  • Jesus is not just God with us (Immanuel)—He is God for us

  • Salvation is the reason for the incarnation

Key truth: Christmas is not about God rewarding good people—but rescuing sinful people.

Gospel Distinction

  • Religion tells us how to get to God

  • The Gospel tells us God came to us

  • Religion says we need improvement

  • The Gospel says we need salvation

Summary

The miracle of the manger is this:
God came to us so He could save us.

Jesus entered our world supernaturally, stepped into our suffering humbly, and came with a singular purpose—to rescue sinners and bring us back to God.

This is the good news of Christmas.
