The Danger of Different Gospels

STORY / CONTEXT

Paul opens his letter to the churches throughout Galatia with an urgent concern: the gospel of grace is being corrupted. False teachers known as Judaizers are adding obedience to the Jewish law to the finished work of Christ, turning the gospel from something received by grace into something earned through works.

Paul wastes no time confronting the danger. Unlike many of his other letters, there is no extended thanksgiving or prayer before he gets to the problem. The issue is too serious because the gospel is at stake, and souls are at stake.

SCRIPTURE READING — Galatians 1:1–10

Paul establishes four realities about the gospel that confront every attempt to distort or add to God’s grace.

1. PAUL SAYS HIS AUTHORITY COMES FROM THE GOSPEL — vv. 1–5

Paul immediately identifies himself as an apostle—not appointed by people, but sent by Jesus Christ and God the Father. His authority to preach and serve does not originate with himself or any human institution; it comes from God.

  • Gospel ministry authority is not given from man.
  • Gospel ministry is given only from God.
  • Gospel ministry is anchored in the atonement of Christ.

Scripture — Galatians 1:3–4

Jesus “gave himself for our sins” to rescue us. Everything Paul is and everything he has been called to do rests on the finished work of Christ.

2. PAUL SAYS THERE IS URGENCY TO THE GOSPEL — vv. 1–5

Paul’s introduction is unusually brief. He moves past his customary words of thanksgiving because there is no time for unnecessary pleasantries when people are abandoning the true gospel.

The gospel cannot be played with, added to, or manipulated because eternities are on the line.

Scripture — Galatians 1:1–5

3. PAUL EMPHASIZES THE PURITY OF THE GOSPEL — vv. 6–9

Scripture — Galatians 1:6–9

Paul is astonished that the Galatians are turning toward a “different gospel”—then immediately clarifies that there really is no other gospel at all.

Two truths must remain clear:

  • There are NOT multiple gospels that save. Jesus alone is the way to the Father.
    Scripture — John 14:6
  • Those who pervert or distort the gospel are under judgment. Paul twice uses the word “accursed” to communicate the seriousness of corrupting God’s message of salvation.

The gospel must remain pure: humanity is sinful, Christ died for our sins, He was buried and raised, and forgiveness and redemption are received through God’s grace.

4. PAUL FINDS HIS IDENTITY FROM THE GOSPEL — v. 10

Scripture — Galatians 1:10

Paul closes this section by forcing a choice between two competing allegiances. We can either serve PEOPLE seeking their approval, or serve CHRIST sure of His approval.

People make a terrible god because their approval is constantly changing. Paul instead describes himself as a doulos—a bondservant of Christ. He isn’t merely saying, “I work for Jesus.” He is declaring, “I belong to Jesus.”

If our identity is rooted in Christ, we no longer have to build our lives around gaining the approval of people.

SUMMARY / APPLICATION

Galatians opens by forcing us to examine what we believe about the gospel and how deeply it shapes our lives.

Upon whose AUTHORITY am I living and serving? Do I understand the URGENCY of the gospel? Am I committed to protecting its PURITY? And where am I finding my IDENTITY?

The gospel doesn’t need anything added to it. Jesus has already done everything necessary to save—and those who belong to Him can live with confidence in His grace.
