Vs. 36 We will settle here tonight…

He Who believes in the Son has eternal life;
But he who does not obey the Son will not see life;
KJV – “Does not believe” = apeitheo… a general word
For man’s sinful attitude toward God.

Romans 10:21 – Paul quotes Isaiah 65:2
All day long I have stretched out My hands to a disobedient and obstinate people.

But the wrath of God abides on him.
“Wrath” – Anger, indignation, judgment… The response of an
Almighty, Holy and powerful God to the injustice,
Rebellion and insolence of people.

OT = Wrath
NT = Love

The John 3:16 chapter speak also of God’s Wrath abiding on people.

George R. Beasley-Murray
British Baptist pastor in WWII London
Southern Seminary 1970 – 80’s
Stuffy, academic, brilliant….

This challenges our contemporary tendency to a comfortable vagueness in interpreting and proclaiming Christ.

Moses gathered the people together in the land of Moab
They were on the brink of the Promised Land
He was 120 years old, about to leave them with Joshua

I set before you two Choices…

Life and God Death and Evil

You choose as you obey or disobey…
So choose Life!

Two clear, stark categories of people:

1) Believe in the Son; Obey; Life
2) Reject; refuse to obey; Wrath

Eternal Life – New kind of life that begins now and is realized
In the Kingdom.

Wrath of God abides – Already, not yet!
