t/s – 1 John, written that we might KNOW we have eternal life,
destroys a common Baptist distortion of the Gospel.
“Once Saved, Always Saved!”
n Misunderstood = “Ticket to Heaven in my pocket”
How I live my life is inconsequential!
Jesus paid it all…. So I might as well run up the Bill!
“Grace abounds, so sin abounds!”
n John deals with how a Real Relationship with Jesus changes our Lifestyle; and Why.

If you think you can be saved, yet continue your old Patterns of Sin, you are wrong on three counts.
Strike One The Nature of Sin
Exp – Sin in Lawlessness = play on words = hamartia is anomia
Sin is not a mistake, a slip up, an old pattern of
Behavior….. It is Rebellion!
Ill – Remember Adam & Eve…. Thou shalt Not…
I think I will!
App – Beware of Euphemisms for sin.
- Mistakes, old habits, residual relationships, disposition
- Addictions! (sexual, chemical) Get some Help!
Strike Two The Nature of Christ’s Work (5-8)
Exp – A Continued Pattern of Sin runs contrary to the Work of Jesus.
a) Jesus came to Take Away Sins

b) Jesus came to Destroy the Works of the Devil
ILL – You shall know the Truth, and the Truth shall set you free!

Strike 3 Nature of the Christian Experience of Salvation (9)
Exp – Christians are “Born of God”
- Note – “Seed” = The very life & nature of God Implanted.
- We have the spiritual DNA of Righteousness!
- A New Nature! Regeneration!
App – John cannot get away from this… We Have New Life!
Concl. – Obvious = Apparent….Manifest! (Not Rocket Science)
