1 John 2: 12-14
Poetry == More Power, Less Precision….. Impact!
Don’t press the language to much….dissect!
Example: Why change of tenses in write….present to aorist
a) John was interrupted, then returned
b) Aorist refers to Gospel, present to letter
c) Style….no theological significance
** take an academic five pages to say so!
Repetition is Important! Take some time and think about this!!
- Enough similarity to be memorable, predictable.
- Enough difference to be interesting
Note: Gender Is not the issue! (male & female)
Read Again in Parts….ALL; Walk with Jesus 40+ years; Less than 40
Children your sins have been forgiven you for His Name’s sake
You know the Father.
Fathers you know Him who has been from the beginning (X2)
Young Men you have overcome the evil one (masculine, not neutor)
You are strong, the word of God abides in you….
The Church needs You to Step up and Fill your Role. (Ages & Stages)
Seasoned, We need the Stability of Your Maturity & Experience
Exp – You know Him Who has been from the Beginning.
A reference to Jesus (else “Know the father” meaningless)
* False Teachers twisted Christology!
ILL – Spurgeon used to tell of preaching about the Faithfulness
Of God when he was a young preacher. His grandfather actually stepped forward and said,
My grandson can tell you that, but I can bear witness to it.
I have passed my three score years and ten, but still He has
Been faithful and true.
John speaks of a long ever deepening experience with Jesus.
Also, a grounded grasp of Who Jesus Is… always has been…
… a new breed of teachers trying to re-define Jesus!

Younger, We Need the Vitality of Your Victory
Exp – The Strength; The Source; The Adversary
More than AGE….STAGE!
The Church needs the Vitality that comes from New Believers
Experiencing Victory over the Evil One
Victory in the Past (Justification)
Victory in the Future (Glorification)
Victory in the Present (Sanctification!)
Note: John 15:7 – My word abides in you….
Psalm 119:11 – How can a young man keep his way pure?
Ill – Entered the Land; promised Possession; never settled it all!
App – A Prayer for Young People… New Believers!
We All Share Common Ground
Exp – “Little Children” refers to every believer…all stages and Ages.
- No chronological progression points to not literal ages…
- John likes “children” as reference to All (2: 1, 12, 13, 18, 28)
App – As Children of God, Forgiveness and Fellowship in Common
n Humility and Dignity for us All!
Many things divide us… Unites us… We all stand before the Father, Forgiven for Jesus’ Name’s sake.
