Knowing & Living the Truth: “To Know”

By Dr. Hance Dilbeck
Sunday, July 10th, 2011

Podcast: Play in new window | Download (Duration: 28:32 — 6.5MB)

Sermon Notes  07-10-11am

1 John 5:13; 1:1-4

Intro:   Do you know for certain your sins are forgiven, eternal life?

  • I have asked people on death bed… “Oh, yes.” (Assurance)
  • Others… hesitate…  “well I have always “hoped so…”

Assumption = We cannot “Know” for certain such matters  of  Ultimate Truth (God, Life, Death)

I have my opinions, ideas of my culture, but in age of Pluralism…aware of so many worldview

  • At best, Simple-Minded; at worst, Arrogant to be so Certain as to Claim to KNOW!

ILL – A famous Attorney, media favorite, tried a high profile Case, claimed to be an Agnostic (Cannot Know)

I am an agnostic; I do not pretend to KNOW what many Ignorant men are sure of.”

                                                                                                     — Clarence Darrow, Scopes trial … died 1938

t/s – Can we Know?  Can we live with Certainty concerning the Ultimate Realities of Life?  (God, Life, Death)

1 John 5:13     (John’s Thesis Statement)

What you hold in your hand, Tapestry of Truth, designed by John

  • Fisherman from Galilee… family of some wealth… hired men and home in Jerusalem.
  • Beloved… He stayed in Jerusalem to care for Mary
  • Settled as Leader in Ephesus…Last of Apostles
  • Old John, 60 years after, wrote Gospel & Letter

But these things have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.       John 20:31

1 John 5:13

Hear…..Believe….Live….KNOW!

“Eternal Life” = Not just quantity of life, but quality;

Not only future, but present;

More than Forever, Better

John 10:10

“Know” = More than gradually growing in assurance; possessing

Now a present certainty…To know absolutely!

What we will find in 1 John…. Deal with Self-Deception & Doubt.

That we Might Know that We have Eternal Life

Objective = THE Faith = Confidence in the Truth about Jesus that We have Received.

  • We can KNOW that the Message/Gospel is TRUE.

Subjective = My Faith = Confidence in the Sincerity/Validity of MY Personal Faith in Jesus.

  • John’s Seven Criteria/Tests for Knowing…

“By this we know that we have come to know Him…”

  • I can KNOW that my faith is Real.  (saving faith)

Truth:  Both Doubt and Deception are Common.

  • Commit to Deal with them this Summer!

ILL – John’s Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, pictures

Doubt as a Strong Castle ruled over by a Giant, Despair!

— Doubts dominate, prevent progress, bring rule of despair

Deal with your Doubts (deception) this summer…. “I Know!!”

t/s – How can we Know anything?

1 John 1: 1-4   (John’s introduction)

  • Most will be fleshed out later…few comments
  • Settle on One word, repeated, speaks to How we Know
  • Humility and Certainty are not mutually Exclusive

Read 1 John 1: 1-4

Vs. 1 – Notice the connection to the Gospel of John

Vs. 3a – John sounds defensive…. He Is Defending

John and His Gospel under attack!

Vs. 3b – Christian Faith is a Corporate Faith (Fellowship!)

Vs. 4 – Compare John 15:11 – These things I have spoken to you

So that My joy may be in you; and your Joy be made full!

T/s – Make me eager with anticipation for our Exploration….

Manifested = repeated in vs. 2 … “Appeared” (NIV)

  • To make Visible, what was Invisible…To make Known, what was unknowable.
  • Passive….Divine Passive…  The Work of God!

“The Life, Eternal Life, was manifested…we proclaimed”

“Life” = Jesus and His Truth

We KNOW, because God made Him Known.

We SEE, because God made Him Visible.

“Mystery” = something we could never know, that was Made Known!

We Know because God is a God of Revelation… He makes visible!

Because man is finite and God is infinite, if man is to know God it must come about by God’s revelation of Himself to Man.

John 1: 1, 14, 18

How Can We Know?             The Life was Manifested to us!

“Oh, we are so limited — culturally, intellectually — we can never really KNOW!”

  • Sounds on the surface like Humility.
  • In Reality, it is Heresy.

God cares enough to make Himself Known to us!  In the person of Jesus, through the Proclamation of the Apostles.

You Who Believe in the Name of the Son of God may KNOW that you have Eternal Life!6

Free and Responsible: Luke 12: 41-48

By Dr. Hance Dilbeck
Sunday, July 3rd, 2011

Podcast: Play in new window | Download (Duration: 27:28 — 6.3MB)

Sermon Notes   July 3, 2011

Intro:   At the close of our service today, “God Bless America”

  • Stand beside her (presence) and guide her (Direction); to the Right with the Light from above.
  • Has He?  Do you think God has Blessed America?

n      Fluke!

n      The result of our Bravery, Work Ethic, …

n      God has Given us this Security, Liberty and Prosperity!

t/s – God has Blessed America…  Shed His Grace on Us!

Considering our abundant Prosperity,

Unequaled Security, and Unprecedented Liberty;

I found myself think of a Teaching of Jesus…

Luke 12: 41-48

Context:           Large crowd gathered to Jesus, He speaks TO Disciples

End Times; His Coming, (Certain and Uncertain Time)

n      Vigilence and Fidelity!  (Ready and Faithful)

n      Punishment and Reward (vs. 37 – Recline at Table)

t/s – Peter speaks up (as usual) ….Are you talking to US, or everyone?

At first, It seems that Jesus avoids question.  In reality, He         gives a Fascinating Answer a People so Blessed need to Hear

READ Luke 12: 41-48

The Principle of Judgment according to Light.

Peter asks, “Is this talk about Stewardship, Responsibility, Reward and punishment, Faithfulness and Vigilence; directed at Us, or everyone?”

  • Everyone is Accountable; Some more than Others!
  • Authority, Knowledge, Opportunity, Liberty

Truth as Old as Amos!  (Amos 3:2)

You only have I chosen among all the families of the earth;

Therefore, I will punish you for all your iniquities!

Everyone Is Accountable; Some more than Others.

Read Luke 12: 41-48 with Comments

Vs. 41-42        “Steward”….”in charge” == A Day of Accounting

Resources to be used for Master’s Purpose!

n      Money

n      Knowledge…..spiritual truth (Gospel)

n      Authority….Influence

n      Freedom is always a Stewardship!

Vs. 43-44        Blessing for the Faithful on That Day!

n      Recognition and Reward

Vs. 45-48a       Punishment for the Unfaithful Stewards

#1        Mistreat people and Misuse Resources (45-46)

“Cut in Half!”

#2        Passive Disobedient… Did Nothing! (47)

The one who knows the good to do and does

Not do it, to him it is Sin!  James

“Many lashes”

#3        “Few Lashes”  (still punishment)

The one who did not Know…committed evil

Levels of accountability… Punishemnt

Vs. 48b            The Principle that answers Peter’s Question

Everyone is Accountable; Some more than Others!

ILL – I first Learned this Principle when I was about 10!

  • Upstairs of Old garage was strictly Off-Limits!  The old wood floor was rotten, weak and dangerous.
  • Black Cat Fire Crackers from an older cousin…
  • Climbed tree, leaned out to old beams that had supported stairs, pulled myself into doorway, pulled brother along
  • Struck match, lite fuse, jumped back…..fell through floor!
  • Waiting for Dad to get home….

Little brother, was sent to bed without supper

I received a more severe punishment!  (I knew better!)

Everyone is Accountable; Some more than Others!

Every time we claim God’s Blessing, His special Favor.  Every time we Celebrate our Liberty.  We need to also embrace this truth.  Blessing is Stewardship.  Liberty is Responsibility!

How should We Use our Freedom, our citizenship in this Nation Free and Blessed?

Exercise our Influence in the Public Arena.

Voice

Vote

Vocation

Exercise our Freedom to Proclaim the Good News of Jesus.

This is the Hope of our Nation.

He is the Hope of the nations!  (knowledge, resources)

Ill – Last week we sent out some of our own to a nation

With very little Liberty…. Ruled by a King.

n      Cannot own a Bible

n      Cannot freely share the Gospel of Jesus

On That Day, both nations will be judged.

We, more than They?

Our Liberty is our Responsibility.

Sermon Notes

Psalm 128   June 26, 2011

Intro:   You have suffered through more sermons on two little songs

Than you ever thought possible… today, #8, final… Psalm 128

  • Last two verses, one more supposition.
  • Review and Read Together… LORD bring to Mind.
  • End with a Blessing

LL – Obsessed with Economy…  “Leading Indicators”  (Lagging)

n      If these measures are good now….economy promising.

n      Stock Market; Building Permits; Consumer Confidence

t/s – A Key Leading Indicator of the Well-Being of Our Nation             (health/Strength)…. Helps us predict our Future!

Psalm 128:5-6

As the Family Goes, So Goes the Nation.

Exp – This Psalm has been intensely personal, almost self-absorbed.

Now, at the end, to focus shifts to City and Nation.

Actually, no shift, Movement…. Like ripples in water…

  • Personal Integrity; Family; Legacy; Community; Nation.

This Leading Indicator Is Not Positive!

  • New York Same-Sex Marriage Legislation…Re-defining Family…. A group of people
  • 41% of all births to unmarried women  (double since 1980)

More & more women choosing to have baby alone.

(Husbands & fathers are seen as non-essential)

The Decay of the Family will be the Demise of our Nation!

All social problems follow the breakdown of the Family.

False Assumption:  Our Problems are Institutional (Gov’t & Schools)

ILL – Like people in ND this week….

Helpless in face of flood of problems!

As the Family Goes, So Goes the Nation!

  • Prayer, Public Policy, Church, Personal Life

The Rise or Fall of Our Nation will begin at Your Table.

T/S – This is a Truth, as plain as nose on face…. We have lost sight!

Biblical Suppositions about Life & Family…We Need to Recapture.

  1. Family is the primary Arena of Your Faith
  2. Building Family without LORD is Vain
  3. The Father is Working FOR your Family.
  4. Children are Valuable
  5. Happiness Starts with Personal Integrity (Moral & Spiritual)
  6. We Find the LORD’s Blessing at Home.
  7. Long-Term Vision for Legacy brings Wisdom & Stability
  8. As the Family Goes, so goes the Nation!

READ Psalm 127-128 Together

LORD, bless our study of Your Word!

NOTE:  One Last Word…. PEACE…. Peace be upon Israel!

Peace = Shalom = Complete, whole, Right or restored Relationships

  • Used 250 times in OT
  • Speaks to the underlying Alienation of Life.

Rupture Relationships

Sense of brokenness, something missing

  • We Need Peace…. Peace eludes us…

Jesus came to bring us Peace  (lived, died and rose again)

These things I have spoken to you so that IN ME, you may have Peace….Tribulation… I have overcome the World.

After resurrection He came to troubled disciples, Peace be with You.

The Gospel of Peace.     Grace and Peace to You in Jesus!

Jesus Is Our Peace.

Having been made right by faith, we have Peace with God through Jesus Christ Our Lord!

Paul speaks to people struggling with single or married; dysfunctional families; Divorce, abandonments, Division…God has called you to Peace.

Peace is always something We Need and what God Gives….

Psalm 128:5-6 – The Priests Benediction after the People had

Ascended to Worship….  A Peace Blessing

Always, when the Priest lifted his hands over God’s people and pronounced a blessing, especially a blessing of Peace, they remembered God’s desire…His commandment for Aaron to Bless His people.

Application

If you want…If you Need… God to bless you, to bless your family… no matter what state it is in presently…  You need Him to make you whole…  Give you Peace…

Sit in Silence…..  Stand if you want God to give you Peace…

In the Name of the LORD God our Creator and His Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ, and in the power of the blessed Holy Spirit, …

The LORD bless you and keep you;

The LORD make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you;

The LORD lift up His countenance on you, and give you PEACE.

Be Seated

Prayer

Invitation….  You Need Jesus, Who Is Our Peace!

Sermon Notes     June 19, 2011

Psalm 128: 1-6

Intro:   Psalm 128–Assumption about Family Life… Practical Wisdom

  • Psalm 128 = Man Focused…  Man as Leader in Family.

Father’s Day… A few Remarks about husband/father & family

“Be a Man!” —What does that Mean?  To be a Christian Man?

  • Financial Provision + Moral Integrity; Emotional Stability & Spiritual Leadership.

Responsibility

Leaders = No matter whose fault… I Am Responsible!

Since our father Adam, we tend toward passivity & blame.

Rise up, O men of God!  Have done with lesser things;

Give heart & mind & soul & strength to serve the King of kings

Rise up, O men of God!  The Church for you doth wait;

Her strength unequal to her task; Rise up and make her great!

Rise up O men of God!  Your families stand in need;

Reject passivity and blame; embrace God’s call to Lead!

You will never be Happy, until you are Responsible! (Respect)

Psalm 128 – A Supposition for Family Life.

Review = Psalm 127 & 128

  • Family is the Arena for Our Faith
  • Vain, without the LORD…. Hope as Father works with us.
  • Children are valuable….Value Children!
  • Ps. 128 = Happy & Blessed…. Integrity (center & circum)

And Family…We find Lord’s Blessing at Home

  • Today, Add Legacy…. Integrity, Family & Legacy

Psalm 128

Vs. 6 – Brings the third generation into view…  Children’s Children

ILL – Have I shown you any pictures of my Grandchildren?

n      No, and I want you to know I appreciate it!

Grandchildren are a biblical value.

Thesis:  Think about your Grandchildren, not your weekend!

Happy& Blessed = Integrity; Family; Legacy!

ILL – We are spending our children’s Inheritance….  (Joke)

  • Corruption of Culture…Degredation of Family…when we stop thinking about the Well-being of Future Generations!

Do You Want to Be Wise in Family Life?

Think about your Grandchildren, not your weekend!

Wisdom Takes the Long-Look.  Fools are Short-sighted.

Example = Jesus

  • Temptations were all toward Immediate Gratification…. Physical appitites; public approval; power….all right now!
  • Jesus chose the Long-Term good….Endured the Cross, despising the shame; then sat down at right hand of Throne

Short-Sighted = Stupid

Think about your Grandchildren, not your weekend!

ILL – Three generations at the failed farm of a fourth….

  • We found the house where my Dad was a 7 year old boy!
  • Stories….Playing with piglets; fat horse on porch; drought
  • Photo === What is left of a House….

Someday, if the Lord tarries, your house will look like this.

Building a House is Vanity.  Spend your life building a House!

  • Bible use of “House” in Psalm 127:1
  • David/Solomon; House of Abraham; Joshua…

As for me and my House, we will serve the LORD!

App – Here is the beauty of It.  No matter what has happened up to

This point… Your contribution to the House is Significant!

There is a glory in it!

  • Putting on finishing touches and details…maintaining.
  • Clearing debree and laying foundation…  (JESUS!)

Happy & Blessed == Respect and Gratitude of Future Generations!

Sermon Notes         June 12, 2011

Psalm: 128

Intro:   Checking out at Lowe’s, “How are you today?”

  • “I am Blessed”  (Not fine, good, OK…)
  • Blessed Identifies the Source of Satisfaction (Not self, surroundings…. What Good I have is from God!)

Psalm 128 – Moves from Happy to Blessed…

Last week = Reverence + Obedience = Happy

Happiness begins with Moral & Spiritual Integrity

(Center & Circumference)

Today = How God Often Blesses a person with Center & Circumferen

Psalm 128: 1-4

We Find the LORD’s Blessing at Home.

Note: Not all will be blessed at Home; Not Only Way God blesses.

Wisdom Literature is General Observation of God’s Way

  • Truths about Family, help us as Church (household of God)

We Find the LORD’s Blessing at Home.

The Similes dominate this Psalm…. Cloud Message for Us…

ILL – I tried one out on Julie…. Date… took her by hand

“You are like a fruitful Vine..”

For now, skip the picture of Vine & Olive Tree…

Your wife shall be within your house, your children around your Table. Behold,

for thus shall the man be blessed who fears the LORD!

“Behold” = Do you want to Find God’s Blessing, Look at Family!

ILL – We used to Play Hide and Seek with an Object…

  • “Warm” or “Cold”…  Uncle Roger took of shirt!
  • Hide object as close as possible to searcher (under chair)

Search for Blessing….Look Within Your House, Around Your Table!

We Find the LORD’s Blessing at Home.

t/s – The picture of Vine & Olive shoots… Unfamiliar, but Important

Common, Familiar National Symbols of God’s Blessing on Holy Land

ILL – Our State’s Overpass Artwork… Images of Wheat, Corn,

Oil Derricks, Cattle…  (Our Prosperity…Bounty of land)

The Grape Vine & Olive Tree represented the Blessing of the Land!

Vine = Green luscious leaves, full, abundant grapes…

  • Fertility, Prosperity, Security…..Joy!

Olive Shoots = New sprouts, branches from Old Olive Trunk

  • Stability, Prosperity, …The Good Life!

Cultivate Family Blessings

Exp – The Vine and the Olive Tree required careful Cultivation.

Vine = Pruning, Protecting,

Olive Tree = 20, 30 40 years before Real Production…

Blessings that require our Careful Cultivation!

Ill – One year, I decided I would like to have a garden…

  • Discovered, Easier to Plant a Garden, than to Care for it!

App –Marriage, Children are like that…. Careful, constant Cultivation

  • Too many plant the Garden, but don’t want to Cultivate it!
  • Time Within the House, Around the Table!

Celebrate Family Blessings

Exp – The Vine and Olive Tree were cause of Celebration, Joy!

What you find Within your House, Around Your Table will

Make your Life worth Living!  (The LORD’s Blessing!)

Ill – My Dad’s story of one electric Light above table…Gathered around to admire it.

(I see the faces now…)  Dirt poor family

App – This Psalm written in Time of great Poverty, Low Expectations;

Or, Prosperity, correcting Perverted Pursuits of Happiness.

Most Poor people understand what we will foolishly forget;

We Find the LORD’s Blessing at Home.

Sermon Notes

Psalm 127    May 29, 2011

Intro:   Over 6,000 American soldiers have died in the War of Terror

  • Husbands, Fathers…. Mostly Sons & Daughters
  • Tragedy of War… Grief that clings to the Soul (child)

ILL– The devastating Storms this week…Piedmont (Thionnet)

n      Hammil Family….  Cole (15 months) & Ryan (3)

n      Over 100 people searched for Cole

n      At a news conference to thank the searchers, Hank Hammil, “It’s a bad deal.  I’ve lost both my boys!”

Children Are Valuable.

t/s – This is not simply a cultural or social truth; but a Scriptural…

Biblical Suppositions of Family Life (Bedrocks that keep us Solid)

  1. Family is the Arena for Our Faith.  (Ascent to Worship)
  2. Trying to Build Family without the LORD…VAIN!
  3. The Father Works FOR Family.  (builds, guards, gives…)
  4. Children Are Valuable.

To state as a Call to Action… Value Children!

Psalm 127

Children Are Valuable.

ILL – Preacher, you really are “Captain Obvious!”  (Duh!)

Everybody knows children are Valuable…

“Behold” == An Interjection that Call for Attention…

Often, an obvious Truth, Overlooked (Look!)

a) Abortion – CDC – Legal Reported Abortions (800,000+)

23 abortions for every 100 Live births

b) Foster Care in OK

11,000+ children…4,000 waiting for Adoption

c) Divorce Rate

Don’t want to Stay Together JUST for the Kids.

Passion/Personal Fulfillment Vs. Children

Behold, Look at this Truth — Obvious yet Overlooked —

Children Are Valuable!

Our Practical Motive to Value of Children.

Exp – Psalm 127, connected to Solomon, Wisdom Literature,

Very Practical…Pragmatic… Self-Interest!

  • Property, Salary, Security, Social Standing

  • The Quality of Your Life will be determined largely by the character of your children and the Quality of your Relationship with them.

ILL – Imagine that Warren Buffett whispered an Investment Tip

  • Solomon gives you an Investment Tip
  • Invest in your Children…. Big Pay-Off!

App – Liability….Responsibility….Asset

It is not untypical of God’s gifts that first they are Liabilities,

or at least Responsibilities, before they become Assets.  The

Greater their promise, the more likely that these sons will be

A handful before they become a quiverful.

Derek Kidner, Anglican Minister & OT scholar

(Just died, 2008, at age 95)

ILL – Imagine someone gave you a few lots of land.

  • Neglect Land and it is only a Liability (Taxes & Trespassers)
  • Take Responsibility to Care for, Cultivate, Construct
  • The Liability becomes an Asset!

App – Responsibility Turns Liabilities into Assets!  (Wise Investment)

T/S – The Psalm packs Power because it speaks to a Higher Motive.

Our Theological Motive to Value Children

Exp – Vs. 3a – Children are a Gift of the LORD

  • children are FROM the LORD…Source!

All Children!

  • “Gift” = Heritage = Promised Land Allotment

Children are Like God’s Gift of the Promised Land to

His People:

God’s Grace Toward Us.

God’s Claim On Us. (Faithful Stewards)

The Land was Always, Actually, His…Given in Trust.

Children Are a Sacred Trust … Always, Actually His!

ILL – Solomon grew up with a Dad consumed with Career.

David was always Fighting Battles, Building cities.

David rose to political power, unrivaled wealth, Fame.

He was a passive Father, an Adulterer, Neglected Kids!

  • Shame, Heart-ache…. David’s Failure as Father created the Cracks in the foundation of his family that soon caused Kingdom to Crumble!
  • His Unfaithfulness to Family was Unfaithfulness to the LORD!

App – Children are Valuable, not because they are Ours;

But because they are His!

A Heritage of the LORD

Sermon Notes  May 15, 2011

Psalm 127: 1-2

Intro:   A convention of delegates from each state gathered in Philadelphia in order to write and agree upon a Constitution.  They were having trouble coming together after winning the war.  The year was 1887, four years after the Revolutionary War ended.

Benjamin Franklin stood to address the presiding officer of the convention.  Franklin was not a born again Christian, but he had a respect for Christians, He believed in an active God and knew the Scriptures.  He was asking for the convention to agree to begin each session with prayer.  Here is James Madison’s record of Franklin’s speech…

t/s – I note this speech today because Franklin quotes our Text,

Psalm 127.  In connection to Psalm 127, he also mentions

“the builders of Babel.”

  • Franklin believed in a God who answers prayer
  • Franklin had solid/sophisticated understanding of Scripture

First, let’s read again Psalm 127: 1-5 (focus on vss. 1-2)

Then, let’s talk about Babel.

Finally, we will find a biblical supposition for Life & Family.

Read Psalm 127

t/s – Why does Franklin connect Psalm 127 to Babel?

(Building in Vain…. Wasted, fruitless efforts to build)

The Story of Babel (Genesis 11)        Key verse:  Genesis 11:4

Contrast for Abraham’s Story…. Genesis 12:2

I will make you a great nation, I will bless you and make your name great!  And so you will be a blessing

God used Abraham and His family to Bless the World!

Pursuing Prosperity and Security….  (“House” = Family)

Prideful reliance on Self   vs.  Humble dependence on God

(Babel)                                     (Abraham)

Our Suppositions about Life and Family.

  1. Family is the Arena for the Living Out of Our Faith.
  2. Trying to build a life/Family without the LORD is Wasted Effort…. Vain… Empty, meaningless, useless

Nissi Dominus Frusta – Without the Lord Frustration – Edinbrough

Labor Omnia Vincent – Labor Conquers All – Oklahoma

t/s – We are a people who pride ourselves in a capacity to Stake Our

Claim in the World; to Build and protect what is Ours!

Signs of Prideful Self-Reliance (Symptoms of Babel Fever)

  1. Is My Work Toilsome?

Work Is good, God-ordained…. Job or Vocation?

  1. Am I Dominated by Anxiety?

We tend to associate Worry with Weakness, Actually, Pride!

Prideful Self-Reliance

Ill – Jesus… Remember you have a Father.

  1. Do I Neglect My Family?

n      Fertility gods and child sacrifice!

n      Imagine trading a child for prosperity, success, wealth

—- We do it one evening meal at a time!

  1. Have I Lost My Integrity?

Vs. 5 – Speaks to status, standing, respect in the public square.

We trade our good name for prosperity and security!

The symptoms of Prideful self-Reliance, Babylonian Fever:

Toil, Anxiety, Neglect, Compromise

Building a life/Family without the LORD is Wasted Effort… Vain!

Oh, you might succeed — Prosperity & Security —  Meaningless!

Solomon had more money, bigger family, better education, wider fame than we could ever imagine:

Vanity, Vanity of vanities, All is Vanity! (Eccl.)

ILL – Boys building a Snow Fort

…Sucked into the Soil…

All our Work, worry, weary years… Vain!  We want our Lives to matter, to count, to mean something.

App – Focus on what God Gives you, not on what you can manage to             Grab for yourself and Guard!

Psalm 127: 1-2

Seek first the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness, then,

All these things will be added unto you.

The Gospel – Life that matters cannot be grabbed and guarded,

It is Given, freely, by God!

Eternal Life is not Grabbed, but Given…           Ephesians 2: 8-9

Psalm 127-128

Sermon #1       “Family Is the Field of Play for Our Faith”         (overview)

Intro:   A Group of people affiliated by consanguinity, affinity or co-residence

Can you guess what word this defines?              Family

There is confusion to the point of Crisis in Family Life Today.

Problem:         Struggling with How To….

(communication, discipline, parenting, …)

Lost track of the deeper issues…

What is a Family?

Why Priority?

“Back to the Future of Family Life”

n      Reclaiming some biblical Suppositions concerning Family (Truths Taken for Granted in Bible)

— Suppositions eroded like slab under House…

n      No Bible “Book on Family Life” — Instead, Assumed Truths concerning Family Run throughout Scripture

Psalm 127-128

(Poetry, not Precepts… speak to deep foundations of Family)

Eight Old Suppositions and (New False Assumptions) about Family; How they impact our Lives today…. You decide Who Is Right

First, Objections:

  1. I Am Single.

You Still have Family (parents, siblings, nieces, nephews…)

Invest in the Next Generation… Use Freedom to Fill a Gap.

  1. We have No Children.

Bible acknowledges the deep disappointment…

127:3- “A gift… A reward” = Not The Only Way God Blesses

Consider Adoption

  1. My Family is a Mess.

“Hello….. Solomon!”

Solomon’s Family ==== Rape, adultery, murder, betrayal..

Nathan sent word, “Jedidiah” == Beloved of the LORD (vs.2)

  • God gives grace to Dysfunctional Families!

The Ideal Informs the Real… Not Perfect, but Better!

ILL – Watching Phil Michelson makes we want to Try..

Note:         No Condemnation.  Correction!

Read Again Psalm 127 & 128

Family Is the Arena for Our Faith

Exp – Our Faith Claim == Jesus died for Our sins and Rose Again

He has given us forgiveness and New Life (Spirit Within)!

Say, “Amen!”

If Jesus has changed Me, that change will be evident at Home.

If Jesus Is Lord, He will Rule my Family Relationships

ILL – The Arena of play for a basketball player is a court (show time!) musician, concert hall soldier, battlefield;

golfer, course; country singer, Grand ole opry

The primary Arena of Play for My Faith === My Family!

Exp – “song of Ascents” == 15 songs of worship used in pilgrimage to

Temple Worship Three Times a year…. 15 steps in Temple!

  • Imagine…..As I approach God in Worship, I am thinking of my Family!

A Consistent Supposition in Bible (world view)

OT – 10 commandments… #1 of second Table.. Honor Parents Joshua, As for me and my house…

NT – Ephesians, “Walk in a manner worthy of Calling”

¼ of teaching about behavior at Home!

1 Peter 3:7 – … so that your prayers be not hindered

Family Is the Arena for Our Faith

False Assumption:     Christians should behave in Public,

(school, office, neighbors…Church!)

but at Home we can relax and be Ourselves.

selfish, short-tempered, resentful, sharp-tongued

The Christian me is not the Real Me!??!

The Christian Life is Lived Out at Home!

Do unto others as you would have it done unto you

By your words you will be judged

Be kind, tender hearted, forgiving one another

Conclusion

On Judgment Day, when we give an account to Our Lord, We might be surprised by His Focus!

ILL – Defensive Back meeting with NFL Scouts before Draft

  • Watch some film…. Practice!

Let’s count how many plays for failed to finish!

When I stand before Jesus, giving an account for my life,

Before examining church, city, $6 million….

Did you love Julie like I love the Church, lay down life?

Sons… instruction & example…

Your Family Is the primary arena for the Living out of your Faith.
