Sermon Notes  08-07-11am

1 John 2: 18-27

Intro:   John Hick, most famous & influential philosophers of our day.

b. 1922 england, consiencious objector in WWII; Oxford

Philosophical theology… Princeton, Birmingham, Cambridge University Philosophy/religion professors adore him – Heretic!

God Has Many Names

Pluralism = Christianity is not the one true religion, not even

Superior in any significant way..

            The Myth of Christian Uniqueness

Pluralism is attractive to people.  If Truth is flexible and any sincere approach to

God is acceptable, then I am free to have      my own way.  One Problem:  Jesus!

The Myth of God Incarnate  (Jesus is not Unique Son of God)

            Second Christianity  (appreciate his honesty)

In order to embrace Pluralism, you have to down-grade Jesus; redefine Him, remake him eliminating His exclusive claims…

T/S – This is nothing new… Relativism of Truth Claims & Pluralism

Tell the Story of Pilate, “I have come into the world to testify of the truth.

And everyone who is of the Truth hears My voice.”

Pilate before washing his hands of Jesus, “What is Truth?”

t/s – skepticism about the Truth claims of Jesus are nothing

new.  From beginning, people questions His Claim to be

The Truth and The Way.

  • The Gospel first spread in an age of Pluralism!  Christians were not trotted out onto the sand of the arena to face the Lions because they held that Jesus was a really good man;

but because they stubbornly refused to acknowledge Any Other Lord!  Exclusive claims in an age of Pluralism!

T/S – John was dealing with False Teachers in Ephesus (Asia)

There is Nothing New Under the Sun…

He called them “Antichrists” == Against / Instead of…

1 John 2: 18-27

Note:    vs. 18 – Jesus taught John that no one knows the hour; but,

That we should all, always live “Ready & Alert!”

(Will address later in our study… return to theme)

Wow!  Nothing New under the Sun!

  • Relativism – vs. 21 – Truth and Lie
  • Pluralism – vs. 23 – No son = No Father!
  • Christology – vs. 22 – Jesus Is the Christ!

Truth Matters!  (Doctrinal Details)

Jesus Is the Christ  (Let John Expand…on Christology…)

1 John 4: 2-3

            1 John 5: 1, 5

            2 John   7

Remember, “antichrists” redefine Jesus. (no outright rejection)

Where did John get the Idea that Christology (Who Is Jesus?) Matters?

Tell the Story of Matthew 16: 13-20

Who Do you say that I Am?

Thou art the Christ, the son of the Living God!

Christology Matters!  Who do you Say that He Is?

  • Liberal Theology; Universalism; Mormonism; J.W.’s…Corrupt Christology!

False Teachers stand Jesus in their midst, strip him of his unique nature, tear away his exclusive claims,

put him through an extreme makeover so that he fits their categories of relativism and pluralism; then present him to the Church… Behold, your teacher.

John says, Beware!  Don’t be Led Astray. (vs. 26)

This redefined Jesus, is an instead of Jesus offered up against Jesus by those too proud to bow before their King.

ILL – Leighton’s Monthly Safety Meeting

(If situation dangerous… Be Aware of Risks!)

Don’t Be Deceived! (vs. 26)

  1. Let the Word of God Rule. (24)

Remember 1: 1-4 – An historic faith… suffered under Pilate

  1. Let the Spirit of God Guide. (20, 27)

“Anointing” = the Spirit of Truth…who guides us in Truth

Jesus calls Him our Teacher!

Note the Balance!

  1. Let the People of God Correct. (19)

The False teachers had a “New Idea”… the Church/leaders

Challenged, corrected; but they would not listen and left!

Find a Bible Believing Church Who will confront Falsehood.

Conclusion

Ill – Stay one night in Johannesburg on way to Malawi.

As we left to walk to a restaurant it was getting dark. Missionary said,

“Be Careful walking back in the dark.”

We hesitated.  “Don’t be Afraid, be alert!”

John says, Do not be Afraid; but do be Alert!

There are those who will lead you astray.

Prayer

Invitation: God forbid that we should traffic in unlived Truth.

                                                                                    H. A. Ironside

a)  You Need Jesus (The Truth & The Way)

b)  You Need the Word, the Spirit and the Church

c)  THEY Need Jesus… The Way!

Sermon Notes  07-31-11 am

1 John 2: 12-17

Intro:   Edmund was destined to be King.  Edmund the Just would reign over  the  land with his brothers and sisters as a good and  capable king; but, he did not act like it at first!

  • Remember the story from CS Lewis, Narnia
  • The White Witch bribed him with Turkish Delight.  He loved the candy so much that he sold out his brothers and sisters and overlooked the enemies, ugliness.
  • Boys, “I can’t stand that guy!”  What a fool, What a shame!  He sold out himself, his family, the kingdom for a box of candy.

t/s – Similar to John’s message today.  Don’t trade the Treasure you’ve receive in Jesus for the

Trifles the world has to offer.

1 John 2: 12-17

Thesis:          Don’t lay aside the Riches you have received from

Jesus to grasp at the “Stuff” of the World.

Part One = Our Standing in Christ (What He has Given Us)

Exp – Perfect tense speaks to what we have received in the past that

Continues right into the present…still remains.

“Children” = All of us

“Fathers” = mature Christians…older

“Young men” = younger Christians

Forgiveness; Fellowship with Father; Foundational Truth; and a Fighting Chance…Victory!

ILL – “Act your Age”  “Be a Man”  “Honor the Family Name”

App – As John challenges us to live a better kind of life, he reminds us

that we have already Received a better standing in Christ!

He is not asking us to be more than Who He has made us!

Ephesians 4:1 – Live Up to Your Name!

Part Two = The Challenge….Don’t Trade the treasure you have received for the trifles the World has to offer.

Read 1 John 2: 15-17

“World” = Not people; not even Creation;

Created order in sinful rebellion against God.

Peterson’s translation…. The Message

Don’t love the world’s ways.  Don’t love the world’s goods.  Love of the world squeezes out love for the Father.  Practically everything that goes on in the world — wanting your own way, wanting everything for yourself, wanting to appear important — has nothing to do with the Father.  It just isolates you from Him.  The world and all its wanting, wanting, wanting is on the way out — but whoever does what God wants is set for eternity.

Two Realities about the World and what It Offers:

1)      The World and what it offers is Passing Away!

Sensuality, Materialism, Pride in Position or Possessions..

“Right Now!”  Passing Away…. Diminishes as soon as you Obtain it!

Ill – Like Plantation owner with chest full of confederate

Cash… worthless!

2)      World Competes for Love You have Already Promised to Him

Vs. 15 – John makes a rather stark, harsh claim…extreme?

Matthew 6:24 – Cannot serve God and Mammon

Thus, for the Christians to Love the Stuff of the World is Both Disloyal and Stupid!  We trade a Love already promised for “Stuff”

Remember Day Esau Sold Out…Thus Esau despised his birthright!

Oh Christian, Don’t sell your birthright for the Pot of the Stuff the world has to Offer.  It’s all Passing away.  You have a Higher Calling!

Sermon Notes   07-24-11 am

1 John 2:6

Intro:   Paul was on his way to Jerusalem and trouble!

He gathered leaders of Church in Ephesus on beach in  Miletus to give them

an affection goodbye and Instructions

Be on Guard!  Savage wolves will come in among you… they will Arise from among your own selves…to draw away…

t/s – John, leading in Ephesus, next generation…

… False Teachers within the Church!

How Can We Know that we (or they) are Really Christians?

  • Evaluating our Own Lives to find Assurance
  • Evaluating our Teachers to find Protection

Note: Evaluate teachers by watching them Live!

1 John 2: 3-6   (vs. 5 – refer to Wednesday on Line)

The Christian Claim

Exp – John helps us understand what it is that we Claim.

a)      To Know Jesus (see. Vs. 1-2) – Mental == Gnostics!

b)      To Love Jesus –                      Emotional

c)      To Abide with Jesus –               Vital

Christians claim a mental, emotional and Vital connection with Jesus!

(Gospel of Cross and born again encounter with the Living Lord)

Ill – FBC Daytona Beach, Fl., found everyone answered “yes.” If

Asked, “Are you a Christian?”

“A life-changing Encounter with Jesus!”

App – Have you had a Life-changing Encounter with Jesus?

  • Do you Know Him, Love Him, Walk with Him?
  • This is biblical Christianity!

t/s – John found false teachers making this very claim!

a secret, maybe mystical Encounter with Christ….

  • How can you “Test” that Claim?

ILL – Man showed up on frontier farm in Tennessee claiming to

be Jesus the Messiah…wanted to be welcomed into home.

  • Farmer, lay preacher began to roll up his sleeves
  • If you are Jesus, this won’t hurt.  If you are not, you deserve it!

For John, Talk Is Cheap!        (The One Who Says……)

t/s – How can we Evaluate or Test the Claim to “Know” Jesus?

Testing the Claim to Know Jesus

Exp – Obedience.  Those who Know, Love and Abide….Obey!

Obedience is very observable.

ILL – “Obedient Children?” == Pattern, not Perfection

Notice a progression in the way John describes Obedience…

a)      Keep His Commandments –     Formal

b)      Keep His Word –                      Personal

c)      Walk as He Walked –               Intimate

ILL – John never got over the two words Jesus used to call His disciples….

Remember in the boat “Follow Me!”

Believe? Know? Love? Abide?  (all kind of fuzzy)

  • Following is clear as a man’s words and deeds!
  • Learning, Loving, Living…. Walking as He Walked!
  • Why do you call me, “Lord, Lord” and not Do what I say?

App -  Obedience verifies Our Claim to Know Jesus!

n      Ask, “Is my life marked by Obedience to Jesus?”

n      Yes == Blessed Assurance!

Conclusion

ILL – Kate crawled into my lap, looked kindly into my eyes,

“Pastor Hance….. you got something in your teeth right here!”

John is too old to play games.  He gets right up close and tells us the Truth, even if the Truth hurts.  He loves us too much to let us live a Lie.  So he confronts us with the plain, simple, unvarnished Truth:

Without Obedience, all your talk about knowing Jesus is Cheap!

Podcast: Play in new window | Download (0.0KB)

Sermon Notes  07-20-11

1 John 2:5

Intro:    John is called the “Beloved Disciple” == Deep Mutual Love.

  • When Gospel spread, he stayed….Mary!
  • Love for Mary?  Love for Jesus!

Consider the connection between Love and Obedience.

1 John 2: 3-6    (headstart for Sunday)

Focus vs. 5       …the love of God has been perfected.

“perfect” = complete, mature, proper End. (not perfection)

ILL – Not buzzer at tend of ballgame (Over)

But final line of a great Play (The End)

In Obedience the love of God stands complete.

Obedience is the proper End of the Love of God.

Question of Grammar —

Subjective Genitive = God is the Subject of Love.

Thus, “The love that God has for us stands complete in

our obedience to His word.”            NIV

Objective Genitive = God is the Object of Love

Thus, “Our love for God stands complete in our obedience

To His word.”

Interpret Scripture by Scripture:            John 14: 15, 21, 23; 15:10

How do we best demonstrate, express our Love for God?

  • Words; Worship; Art; Sacrifices of time and Money…
  • Keep His Word!  Obedience.
  • ILL – Remember Saul and Samuel at Gilgal after battle with

The Amalekites (1 Samuel 15:22)

  • John’s Age
  • John’s Affection
  • He speaks with the plain, honest, straight-forward language of your grandpa!

1 John 2:1-2

Calloused       Pretend all is well… ignore conviction

Condemned    Overwhelmed with burden of guilt… final failure

Confession      Come Clean…Honest to God…

Seeking forgiveness & cleansing…

We confess with Confidence in Jesus…  Our Advocate

ILL – Afraid to confess, like a child spilled on clothes…

“Advocate” = One called to stand beside us

…. To Help us… to plead our cause…

a)      The Father – His close/equal relationship (not Judge)

b)      Jesus – His humanity… He sympathizes with us

c)      Righteous – Emphasized in word order… Standing in God’s Presence!

d)      Propitiation – Atoning sacrifice…appease His wrath!

  • Plead = not clever words, excuses, denials…Paid in Full!

“If ANYONE sins… Does Anyone include you?”

Conclusion:     Hymn #135…. Read Responsively the stanzas Sing the Hymn! (Close Service)

Sermon Notes   07-17-11 am

1 John 1:5 – 2:2

Intro:   Evidence to Time Travel… Baptists to 1st C. Ephesus!

We have a problem in Baptist Life… American Christianity

  • A form of religion, but deny its Power!

— Profess a faith in Jesus

— Baptism, attend church, give money…

— Tolerate, even celebrate a lifestyle of sin!

  • Once Saved, Always Saved!  I am secure!

“Sin does not matter!”

T/S – 1 John, “That you might Know that you have eternal life”

  • Agree with God about your Sin!

1 John 1:5 – 2:2

Read the Whole  (Beauty and Power…Clarity often clouded)

Walk through Slowly; then, Two marks of an Honest to God Christian!

Vs. 5    Lives connected to God are marked by Light!

(More than “Knowing”, Walking!… )

Vs. 6    “If we Say…” (1st of three….6, 8, 10)

  • John writes under pressing Danger of False Teachers!

Strong Words…. Not differing ideas, opinions…

Truth & Lies!  Light and Darkness!

  • Sin does not matter… No impact on my walk with God!

Minimizing Sin…

If I “Know” Jesus, my sin is of no consequence!

— salvation is spiritual, sin is physical…no connection

  • No knowing, but practicing Truth that matters!

ILL – Country Music, southern culture…

n      Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings… Disconnect!

Honky Tonk Lifestyle; harbour Hateful spirit; Greed…

Vs. 7    “Walking” === Lifestyle that reflects the character of God

Note:  The Blood!

Vs. 8    A philosophical argument…. No sinful nature… No guilt

  • People are basically good!
  • Self-deception…. Deep down… what about your guilt?

ILL – “Guilt” as psychological or cultural…. REAL!

Vs. 9    “Confess” = To say the same…Agree with God about our Sins

“Cleanse” used for second time!

1st = a continuous cleansing….sanctification

2nd = a specific act… cleansing from effect of each sin  “katharsis”

To doubt forgiveness & cleansing is to question His character

Vs. 10  “If We Say” (3X) == Personal …I do not Sin!

The Whole Message of the Gospel speaks to Our Sin!

  • No Sin = God a Liar!

Vs. 1    A personal glimpse of Old John the Beloved

John is aware of possible Misunderstandings…Distortions

1)      If we can never be done with sin, why strive after holiness?

2)      If forgiveness is so certain, why dread falling into sin?

Purpose in writing…. You would Not Sin!

Vs. 2    “Propitiation” = Atoning Sacrifice…. Blood!

Sin is Serious, matters!

History of this passage….

  • We should be Holy, “Not Sin!”      (Against Liscentiousness)
  • We cannot, “Not Sin!”         (Against Legalism…list of sins)

ILL – Balance Is Beautiful …. Athlete; Art; Architecture…Theology!

Two Marks of an Honest to God Christian

We Pursue Holiness

Exp – We walk in the Light.  Live in fellowship with God and with

Each other; Live the Truth…Agree with God!

In plain language, all high-flying pretensions to communion

With God must verify themselves by practical righteousness

Alexander MacClaren

Ill – Sheep and Pigs in the Mud…

  • Sheep slip in and quickly want out
  • Pigs like the Mud!  Comfortable

App – If you are Happy in your Sin…Natural environment

You have reason to Doubt!

We Plead the Blood of Jesus

Exp – In all our Walking, with every step of striving, we plead the

Blood of Jesus.  He is Our Righteousness!  Propitiation.

  • We are Righteous because He forgives and Cleanses!

ILL – “Self-Righteous” !!  (An ugly, off-putting, person)

  • Righteous because Jesus died for me!

When satan tempts me to despair, and tells me of the guilt within,

Upward I look, and see him there Who made an end of all my sin.

App – Christians Agree with God about our Sins!

( No  Denial, No Dillution…. No Despair!)

Conclusion

“I am not what I ought to be, I am not what I want to be, I am not what I hope to be in another world; but still I am not what I once used to be, and by the grace of God I am what I am”

John Newton
