Sermon Notes  February 13, 2011

Acts 11:29

Intro:   Paul was arrested in Jerusalem and sent bound to Rome.

Before he ever entered the city, he was warned …….A Prophet

  • Paul’s belt, bound himself hand & feet; laying there on the ground, “In this manner the Jews in Jerusalem with bind the man who owns this belt and deliver him to the gentiles
  • Agabus – Locust (My imagination runs wild)

Prophecy = A Message spoken under the inspiration of the

Holy Spirit for the direction and edification of the

Church.  On rare occasions….Future!

t/s – Agabus used by Spirit to give direction concerning future

— Not the first time he appears and speaks of future

— Agabus first appears in ANTIOCH.  (Acts 11)

Review:           Trust Jesus to Build His Church.

Speak of Jesus…Everyone, Everywhere, Anyone

Spend Time Together:  Encourage & Teach the Word

Acts 11: 27-30

Give Generously Together

When the book of Acts records the work of God in the Church,

It consistently records their generosity… Gave their Money

  • Jerusalem (Acts 2) – Church is born… 7 verses…Money
  • Antioch – Entire paragraph about this act of Generosity!

Great Churches are Generous Churches!

ILL – Churck Swindoll’s story about Preacher in deep south

  • The church, like the crippled man, must get up and walk!

— That’s right revered, let it walk.

  • This church, like Elijah on Mt. Carmel, has got to run!

— Run, let it run, preacher, let it run.

  • Church has got to mount up on wings like eagles and fly

— Let it fly, brother, let it fly!

  • If this church is gonna fly, it’s gonna take Money!

— Long silence…. Let it walk, preacher, let it walk

t/s – I told that silly, funny story; and you laughed… a Nervous             Tension rises when the preaches talks about Money.

  • Some preacher have distorted the Bible, manipulated
  • To preach & Teach the Bible…. Talk about Money

n      The Law speaks often about Giving

n      The Proverbs contain a constant theme

n      The Prophets condemn greed and call for Tithing

n      Jesus talked as much about Money as anything

Where your treasure is,

there will your heart be also!

n      Cannot tell the Story of Antioch without talking about their remarkable Generosity!

Give Generously Together

Acts 11:29       A condensed doctrine of Giving!

How to Give (Run through Quickly)

Personal Any & Each….  Note: vs. 30 ….Corporate

— Paul & Barnabas did not tell them what to give

Proportional To the degree that each had means

— socio-economic diversity   — All gave their part

Planned “Determine” == Appointed…To set Boundaries

— Not knee jerk, spare change,… Careful & thoughtful

Prayerful Planned & Prayerful coexist…. Vs. 28 – “By the Spirit”

ILL – Joe Gorley, my first Mentor in Ministry…

  • Many aspects of my approach forged in early years.
  • This is Paul’s first encounter with Generous Giving…

… Later instructions reflect the Antioch Experience

1 Cor. 16:2; 2 Cor. 9:7

App – With our Giving, we want to follow the Pattern of Antioch.

— Each of us Pray and plan to give as God has Prospered us.

T/S – The power of this paragraph about the Generosity of Antioch

Comes not from their Methods, but their Motives…

WHY We Give Generously Together

We Give as an Act of Obedience

Exp – Vs. 28 – “Stood Up” == A setting of Congregational Worship

  • God Spoke to them about the need in Jerusalem.

They Acted in Obedience

  • Giving Money is a spiritual discipline through which we learn to listen to the Spirit and Act with tangible Obedience!

We Give from a Desire to Serve

Exp – “Relief” (vs. 29) == Service… This our word Deacon.

They were motivated to Give because they wanted to Serve.

  • Impact the Lives of People!

We Give as an Expression of Fellowship

Exp – Give… To the dwelling in Judea Brothers

These Gentiles, yet to be fully embraced by Jerusalem, committed to give their money because of their deep sense of         connection, spiritual relationship, common bond.

Fellowship!

Note: Plenty of Poverty in Antioch!

Famines were across Empire…..  Why Jerusalem?!

Fellowship with One Another                Giving Together

Fellowship with Church in Judea

Conclusion This is Odd Behavior…. Extraordinary.

Jesus Is Real to These People!!

Sermon Notes  January 16, 2011

Acts 11: 19-26

Intro:   I have read about a church founded by accident.  A few people,            untrained, without a real plan     stumbled into a major city and     began to speak about Jesus to   people  who would listen.

  • Many people were saved.
  • Long held barriers of race, ethnicity came crashing down
  • Prayer, passion for Jesus, generosity… Commitment to Word.
  • Stood firm on Truth of Gospel, carried to other nations.
  • For 300 years stood in the 3rd largest city of World as a center of world-wide Christian influence… Antioch.

t/s – What if the leaders of this great church could speak to us?

What Advice would they give?

n      I am humbled by our situation and hungry for Wisdom.

n      Eight sermon from Acts record of Lord’s work at Antioch — Advice from Antioch

Acts 11: 19-26

Jesus Builds His Church

The Church at Antioch was not the result of well trained church planters, targeted marketing, careful planning….

Acts 11:21 – The Hand of the Lord was with them

Acts 14:27 –

Acts 15:40

Jesus Builds His Church

As the story of Antioch is told there is a strong and intentional emphasis on the Church as the Lord’s Work.  Where did these early disciples get this idea?!

Matthew 16 – Jesus pulled the 12 aside for a retreat

“Who do You say that I Am?”

“On this rock I will build My church!”

Jesus Builds His Church

t/s – As I see this truth lived out at Antioch, I am convinced our brethren in that great church would share two truths with us…practical applications from this Promise.

First, follow Jesus; then, Find out where you are going.

Exp – When those few obedient witnesses arrived at Antioch, they had

No idea what they were starting…. Move to Third largest city;  break down gentile barrier; establish a center for World Evangelization…

They were just excited to follow and fish!

They display a Bible truth as old as Abraham.  First we follow

The Lord….later in the journey, we discover the destination.

Ill – Working with Paul guy as a 9-10 year old boy…

  • What are we doing?  Where are we going?
  • Not a Word!  Walked to barn and I followed.  Hand me a basket, pick up his knife, maybe a hoe, put on straw hat
  • I figured it out…Going to the Garden!

App – This principle from Antioch is important…

a)      Individual – First, Follow…Not knowing Where/What

b)      QSBC – We want to Follow Jesus…He has the plan!

n      We must be Careful with “Vision.”  “Plans”

** Only one reason I have the confidence to shepherd this

Great Flock:  Jesus Is the Chief-Shepherd!

He Leadeth Me, O Blessed Thought!

Attempt More than YOU can Do!

Exp – I have discovered the Audacity of Antioch…Nobodies!

n      Lead Jerusalem in breaking down gentile barrier

n      Impact the entire Empire with the Gospel!

Ill – A Bivocational preacher, shoe cobbler, in late 18th C. England

Developed a burden for the Lost people of India.  He

Preached at an Associational meeting in Nottingham on

May 31, 1792, text Is. 54 – “Enlarge the place of thy Tent.”

Challenged English Baptist to take the Gospel to Nations

Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God!

App – Walking with Jesus will Stretch your legs.

—- Obedience & Faith always move us beyond our Limits.

NOT, “What Can WE do?”, but, “What Does Jesus Want?”

t/s – We want to worship, serve, love and grow in such a manner that

everyone watching will observe that,

Jesus Is Building His Church!

“Look What God Is Doing!”  (His for us, not ours for Him)

n      First of All, Wait for the Holy Spirit!

Conclusion: The Story of Antioch contains a favorite phrase,

The Hand of the Lord was with them.  (Acts 11:21)

From Nehemiah, who overcame great opposition to lead the people to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem after the exile.

  • Nehemiah admits he secured the permission, protection and provision for the project from King Artexerses only because of God’s Work, The good hand of God was on me! (2:8)
  • When the wall was complete, Nehemiah’s enemies and all the nations around saw it….they recognized that this work had been accomplished with the Help of our God! (6:16)

QSBC…A Great Work… “Look What God Is Doing!”
