Sermon Notes  10-02-11pm

1 John 5: 13-17

Intro:   I believe old John wrote the Gospel of John and 1 John at the

Same time…. Maybe the letter was a companion to the Gospel.

Gospel, but these things I have written so that you may believe

That Jesus is the Christ, the son of God; and that believing you

May have life in His name.     (John 20:31)

1 John 5:13 – A complementary Purpose.

Note:   You can have life, and not have Assurance

n      Doubt is a common foe!

Confidence that Jesus is the Son of God

Confidence that I Know Him…Saved

n      Moral test = obedience

n      Social Test = love

n      Doctrinal test = Confession of Faith in Jesus

t/s – Assurance is more than confidence that we will go to heaven

someday, one day, in the future….

Confidence in Prayer…. Read Vs. 14-15

We Ask, He Hears, We Have….

“According to His Will”

  • A Limitation?

Ill – Like frequent flyer miles….you have to read the fine print)

  • A Boundary

Boundaries bring freedom, not limitation!

“Confidence” = Free Speech!

Imagine praying, knowing, that whatever you asked,

No boundaries…. Would happen…  Not a Word!

ILL – Elementary School playground study… Fence/None

n      Fence gave Freedom!

t/s – John gives an example of our confidence in Prayer…

Interceding for a Brother

1 John 5: 16-17

We are intrigued, captivated by the obscure; but we overlook what is plain and clear….

ILL – Like a perfectly painted wall, with one Run…drip.

ILL – David James when discipling me….

“Just work on that parts you understand.”

The Obscure… “A Sin unto Death”

1)      Specific Sin(s)

Catholic Idea of Mortal and Venial Sins… forgivable

10 commandments, etc…

Note:  All Unrighteousness is Sin

2)      A State of Willful Sinning

Notice no definite article with sin (16b, 17)

Note “the sin”, not “a sin” but “sin”

A state of sin…willfully chosen and persisted in…

Old Testament… High-Handed Sinning (Presumptuous)

3)      The Unpardonable Sin…Blaspheme of the Spirit

A deliberate, arrogant, open-eyed rejection of the Truth

Concerning Jesus… Rejecting the Holy Spirit’s Witness!

n      John’s “Anitchrists” the False Teachers within the church

The Clear Teaching of John…

What to do when you see your brother sinning

  • Accuse; Attack; Avoid; Announce… ASK!

He will ask = future tense verb… A duty commanded, or expected

He will give him life == God will give sinner life, OR Intercedor…

A Promise of Restoration!

ILL – Pam Frisbie… Vanished… Instinct…  She ran to lift him Up!

App – When I see a brother or sister sin and fail to Intercede;

My sin is likely greater than his.

Invitation:          Instruments & Alter Call for Intercession!

Sermon Notes 09-25-11 pm

1 John 5:1-5

Intro:    ILL – Coach Demoss, Wrestling Coach… long practices…

… double legs, single leg, bottom moves, tops moves…

Drill, Drill, Drill….. Introduce something new….

Confidence, not from Arrogance, nor Ignorance; but Evidence.

1)      Confession of Faith in Jesus, Christ, Son of God

2)      Obedience to His Commands

3)      Love, like He loves

Repetition…

1 John 5: 1-5   Read with Comments

Vs. 1                Believes (present) == has been born of God (perfect)

“Christ”

Familial Love…. Natural within the Family of God!

Vs. 2                True love for those around me == Obedeince!

n      No, “All we need is love”

n      Love as easy going affection, no limitations.

n      Love Tells the Truth!

ILL – little girl, pouting when disciplined,

“You don’t love me!”

Vs. 3                His commandments are not burdensome

n      Tell the Story of Matthew 11:28-30

Context of legalism & Pharisees

Vs. 5                Jesus is the Son of God == Jesus is the Christ (1)

n      Faith Focused on Jesus… Faith with Content!

Vs. 4-5                        John introduces a new little twist of Truth

READ vs. 4-5

In Ch. four John promises Confidence before God on Judgment Day.

Now, he promises Confidence now, in our daily lives, In The World.

“Overcome” = Nika = victory, conquest,

Defeating an enemy or opponent

Nike = goddess of strength, speed & victory

Picture old John, maybe on Patmos Island hauling rock…

… Claiming Victory!

“World” == All the powers opposed to God that make obedience

Difficult.

n      Moral pressures                              (obey)

n      Intellectual pride                             (believe)

n      Social/physical Persecutions            (Love)

Triple repetition…. “Overcome the World” (3X)

John 16:33

Notice the subtle movement between the Three (4-5)

1st –      Abstract – “Whatever”…. Present tense

Focus on the power, not the person.

2nd –     Historical – Has overcome, Aorist,… One time , Dramatic

a)      Defeat of False Teachers in Church (4:3-4)

b)      Conversion….Their common experience of Faith

Then I repented of my sins and won the Victory!

3rd –      Personal (5) – “Who” — Not “Whatever”

You can Overcome the World!

ILL – Playing night games at Priest’s house…. Walk past alley.

  • I knew Mom & Dad would welcome me into House; and wasn’t so sure I could make it past the Alley!

Confidence Before God; and, Confidence in the World….Victory!

Promise of Victory is more than heaven One Day!
