Mark 1: 9-11

Intro:    Mark’s story is so condensed…. Mind’s race is all directions.

  • Baptism in three short verses.

Mark 1: 9-11

Rabbits to Chase (A little meat on bones)

1)      Doctrine of Trinity

2)      Baptism as Immersion (vs. 10 – coming out of water)

3)      From Nazareth (never mentioned in OT or Josephus)

n      God uses the outsiders, … No Respecter of People

Dead End Trails…. Falling into the ditch of Deception

1)      Jesus needed to Repent and be Forgiven

  • Matthew 3 – John objects…  To fulfill all righteousness

n      Affirming John & Others

n      Identifying with sinful man… became sin for us…

n      It is the Right thing to do!

— Jesus knew it was the Plan for His Beginning

2)      Jesus is Adopted….Received the Christ…At Baptism

  • Ebionism = Jesus a unique, gifted, normal man

He became the Christ at Baptism

Hermeneutical PrincipleInterpret Scripture by Scripture

Understand fuzzy text through Clear

Jesus Is sinless.

Jesus Is the Eternal Son of God

Read the Text Again….Stay on the Main Road…Central Truth.

Mark 1: 9-11

  1. The Heavens are Torn OpenRent Assunder.
  • Mark 15:38 – A New Access to God!

Something Big is about to Happen… His Ministry

  1. The Spirit Descends on Jesus like a Dove.

Contrast with John the Baptist’s message about Messiah

  • Axe (dead wood); Fork (chaff); Fire…Judgment!
  • Dove == Gentle Strength

Anointing == Oil as Spirit

Christ = Anointed One

t/s – All leads toward the Voice

  1. The Voice Speaks from Heaven

Imagine…what would you do if voice from Heaven?  (Listen!)

You are My beloved Son; in You in am well-pleased.

Who Is Jesus? (His Public Introduction!)

ILL – Before Jesus spoke plainly to the disciples about What

He came to do…Death/Resurrection…

Who do you say that I Am.

You are My beloved Son === Psalm 2:7

With Who I am Well-Pleased === Isaiah 42:1

Jesus Is the Son of God; the Servant Savior of the LORD

The Baptism challenges us with the central question at the very beginning of the Story….  Who Is Jesus?

  • Gifted Teacher; Revolutionary Leader; Healer; Noble Example

ILL – Building Blocks as a child….

  • the first ones, the big ones a the bottom…most important, be very careful….No hope a standing unless get those right!
