- Drive Out the buyers and sellers; Overturn the Tables and counters; Stopped the people passing through….
Why Such Dramatic Attack?!
Mark 11:17 Jesus’s Passion for True Worship
True Worship Reaches Up to God
Exp – My house shall be called a house of prayer reminds us that
Worship, at its most basic level, is connection with God.
- We Speak to Him
- He Speaks to Us
App – The people were present, active, going through motions
… If God had been absent, they would not notice.
True Worship Reaches Out to Other People
Exp – My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations
- Jesus drove the merchants from the court of the Gentiles!
- Isaiah 56:7 — Desire for all People to come and Worship
App – True Worship wants to make the LORD famous…!!
True Worship Purifies Us
Exp – You have made it a robbers den
(not misunderstood, under-understood)
Jeremiah 7: 1-11
App – You need not be pure to Worship; but, Worship will Purify!
T/S – Jesus’ passion for True Worship moved Him to cleanse the Temple; yet, there is something even more substantial at Work. Jesus Is Pronouncing Judgment on Israel….Condemnation of the Priestly Establishment and the Temple Worship of His Day
…. Far more than Reformation…Clean up your Act…Judgment Day!
Intercalation (bracketing, sandwiching one story in middle of another)
Note: my wife does this…
a) To convey a lapse of Time                          (chronological)
b) To allow one to interpret the other  (theological)
Two stories bracketed…. The fig tree interprets the Temple
READ Mark 11: 12-21
Jesus pronounces Judgment on Unfaithful Israel
- The Temple, like the Fig tree, was all leaf, no fruit.
Magnificence of Temple masked corruption
- The Temple, like the Fig Tree, will be Destroyed.
Within the generation…terrible destruction!
A Display of the Wrath of Jesus!
ILL – At Christmas we sing, “Sweet Little Jesus Boy”
— He Grew Up!
Some NT scholars Reject the cursing of the Fig Tree as out of Character for Christ. They don’t know Jesus! Jesus brings Judgment, especially on Religious Hypocrits.
When I think of Jesus looking all around the Temple… a repeated phrase from the book of Revelation comes to mind…over and over the Lord says to His churches…. I Know Your Deeds!
- Not called to look good, but to bear fruit.
- Not desire the pomp and polish of religious professionalism, but Worship marked by Prayer, Passion for lost & Purity
