Overcome” = Nika = victory, conquest,

Defeating an enemy or opponent

Nike = goddess of strength, speed & victory

Picture old John, maybe on Patmos Island hauling rock…

… Claiming Victory!

World” == All the powers opposed to God that make obedience

Difficult.

n      Moral pressures                              (obey)

n      Intellectual pride                             (believe)

n      Social/physical Persecutions            (Love)

Triple repetition…. “Overcome the World” (3X)

John 16:33

Notice the subtle movement between the Three (4-5)

1st –      Abstract – “Whatever”…. Present tense

Focus on the power, not the person.

2nd –     Historical – Has overcome, Aorist,… One time , Dramatic

a)      Defeat of False Teachers in Church (4:3-4)

b)      Conversion….Their common experience of Faith

Then I repented of my sins and won the Victory!

3rd –      Personal (5) – “Who” — Not “Whatever”

You can Overcome the World!

ILL – Playing night games at Priest’s house…. Walk past alley.

  • I knew Mom & Dad would welcome me into House; and wasn’t so sure I could make it past the Alley!

Confidence Before God; and, Confidence in the World….Victory!
